After How Many Years Without Sex Are You Considered a Virgin Again
If you are a adult female and haven't had sex for a while, you lot may be concerned that things have changed.
Non with the act itself (don't worry the basics are withal the same) but with your trunk and, in item, your hymen.
Online bulletin boards are filled with concerned women who haven't had sex activity for several years and are unsure whether their hymen may have grown back.
Worries include if information technology means they are technically a virgin once more and if information technology is going to hurt when they practise choose to have sex again.
The uncomplicated answer is no, your hymen will non grow dorsum.
To explain why, I spoke to Dr Pandelis Athanasias, consultant gynaecologist at London Women's Centre.
Dr Athanasias said many people believed the hymen completely covered the vaginal entrance and breaks during vaginal penetration.
However, he said he would describe it equally a small tear on a thin layer of tissue which is commonly accompanied by some haemorrhage.
But why doesn't it grow back again?
'The hymen tin't grow back as information technology's just stretched and torn tissue without the ability to regenerate,' said Dr Athanasias.
'We occasionally have patients calling and requesting appointments in society to clarify whether they are still virgins.
'The hymen stretches and tears non just through penetrative sex but also during practise or while inserting a tampon or other objects into the vagina.
'Also if a woman relaxes, uses lubrication and digitally stretches the hymen, so it might not tear during intercourse.
'So, you can't definitely tell if someone is a virgin if they have a hymen or is not a virgin if they don't take a hymen.'
Dr Athanasias said he occasionally has phone calls from women looking to have their hymen restored – particularly if sexual forbearance before marriage is important to their culture.
'In some cultures a woman losing her virginity before marriage tin have consequences, hence the requests for repair or restoration of the hymen,' he says.
'This is called hymenoplasty and tin be performed with different surgical techniques under local or general anaesthesia.
'I don't perform those procedures and we don't take reliable statistics regarding the number of women undergoing hymen restoration surgery in the UK every year.'
Will sex hurt if I haven't had sex for a while?
I of the other things you may exist worried almost before y'all jump dorsum in the saddle (and then to speak) is if it going to injure?
You're not alone.
Dr Athanasias said he spoke to many women who accept concerns when they are resuming sex activity later months or years of abstinence.
If it will hurt or non (and how much it may injure) will vary depending on your age.
What is a hymen?
A hymen is a thin layer of tissue that partially covers the opening of the vagina – partially not completely.
It's usually found 1-two cm within the vaginal opening.
When a woman has vaginal penetrative sex for the first time, the hymen usually stretches and/or tears.
It doesn't only happen with sexual intercourse.
The hymen can stretch or tear during exercise or tampon insertion.
'When the woman is still in her reproductive years she might experience some discomfort because it can take longer for the vagina to cracking and go lubricated during sexual arousal and the pelvic muscles aren't used to having sex,' Dr Athanasias says.
'The symptoms commonly resolve before long and a vaginal lubricant is all yous need.'
Later on the menopause and due to the lack of estrogen still, the symptoms will take longer to resolve and will crave handling.
The vaginal lining becomes thinner, drier and subsequently sore because of a condition called vaginal atrophy.
Sexual intercourse can be painful and accompanied by vaginal bleeding.
And, while the average historic period of reaching the menopause is 51 years old, many women become through the change prematurely.
These women could be aged in their 30s or 40s and get through menopause either naturally or later on surgical removal of the ovaries or perchance after chemotherapy to treat cancer.
'Well-nigh all women in this age group will be sexually active,' said Dr Athanasias (it'south really thought to be 87% of 31-45-twelvemonth-olds).
'As the vaginal tissue becomes dry and sparse, sex tin become very uncomfortable and many women even draw it as incommunicable.'
Your sex life doesn't have to exist over – hurrah!
There are treatments available which mean y'all and your partner tin go along to enjoy a salubrious sex life even after menopause.
Dr Athanasias explained that vaginal lubricants and moisturisers can help but it is the local estrogen, which is bachelor in vaginal cream or tablets, that aims to treat the underlying cause and not but the symptoms.
'The handling of vaginal atrophy can be challenging when topical estrogen fails to make a departure or is contraindicated (cannot be used in certain cases),' he says.
'In the past at that place were non any available treatment options and unfortunately those women had to avoid sex activity and larn to live with their condition.'
Fortunately, in recent years there have been developments to help make information technology more comfortable for women to have sex later on the menopause.
At Dr Athanasias'southward clinic, he uses the CO2 vaginal laser therapy which, he says, has shown outstanding results in treating women with vaginal cloudburst and helping menopausal women to resume sexual intercourse.
Information technology has meant that women have been able to continue their sexual activity life into old age.
He added: 'Many of my patients are in their 70s and 80s and the satisfaction rate after the treatment is about 90%.
'I used to be skeptical regarding vaginal light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation treatments just later on traveling to the Us and Italy (pioneers in light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation handling) and talking to patients and clinicians I was convinced to introduce the treatment in our clinic.
'I'one thousand extremely pleased with the results and the big number of women we are able to assistance.'
